5 Things You Might've Missed: EFL Review, 11-14 September

Right, weekend catch up.

Here's what actually happened across the EFL between 11 and 14 September.

The Ref Got Subbed Off

Port Vale went into this one bottom of League Two, winless, and with real pressure mounting on manager Jon Brady after 6 games without a win. Then referee Leigh Doughty got injured after the first half, and fourth official Aaron Jackson took over for the second 45.

Even the refs are getting injured. Something's wrong.

Jackson's first big call was to award Vale a penalty on 70 minutes, after Luca Woodhouse fouled Jordan Gabriel in the box. George Byers chipped it down the middle. Exeter's Reece Cole had a late free kick to level things up and put it over the bar instead. Vale won 1-0, their first win of the season, and somehow still not the strangest thing that happened at Vale Park that day.

Down to 10 Men, Level Anyway

Firstly, Rotherham and Salford have never met in the league before, fact.

Ryan Graydon put Salford ahead inside 9 minutes, Joe Powell doubled it in the 31st minute, against the club that sold him to Salford back in July. Rotherham hit back either side of half time: Brandon Cover's first goal for the club, then a Paul Mullin penalty after Will Aimson tripped Ossama Ashley in the box. Ashley then made it 3-2 himself on 55 minutes.

That should have been that. Instead, Abraham Odoh went down in the Rotherham box on 69 minutes looking for a penalty, picked up a second yellow for simulation, and was gone. Salford boss Peter Cklamovski still reckons there was contact. Referee Dean Whitestone didn't agree, and Salford played the last 21 minutes with 10 men. For diving. League 2 'eritage.

They levelled anyway: Macaulay Langstaff scored his first goal for the club from the penalty spot on 74 minutes after Aimson was fouled at the other end, and it finished 3-3. 10 men, 6 goals, and a first ever league meeting that had absolutely everything.

West Ham Are Smurfing

Worth saying plainly, because it's easy to miss if you've not been paying attention: West Ham United got relegated from the Premier League, and you can tell. Nuno Espirito Santo's side put 6 past Hollywood's favourite Wrexham at the London Stadium without reply, and did it with 6 different scorers. Jarrod Bowen, Joel Piroe, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Valentin Castellanos, Mohamadou Kante and Manor Solomon all got on the scoresheet. talkSPORT reckon it's the first time in the club's 131-year history that's happened in a single match, with the previous record standing at 5. It's also West Ham's biggest league win in 28 years.

On For 2 Minutes, Off for a Red

Mansfield made just the one change at half time against Huddersfield, brought on Owen Dodgson for Stephen McLaughlin, and watched him get sent off before most fans had sat back down. A minute or so into the second half, Dodgson made a late lunge on Derensili Sanches Fernandes and was shown a straight red on 47 minutes. Mansfield spent the rest of the match defending a goalless draw with 10 men.

And did so successfully.

Ashley Fletcher missed a glaring header for Huddersfield on 63 minutes that really should have won it, but Mansfield picked up their first clean sheet of the season, and Huddersfield stayed unbeaten, for what that's worth against a side down to 10.

Dodgson will serve a 3-match ban and, fair play to him, admitted afterwards that he knew he'd let his teammates down. Nigel Clough called the defensive shift a benchmark for the rest of the campaign. 2 minutes into his afternoon, Dodgson somehow gave Mansfield's season its best defensive performance yet. Football.

Also, as if Nigel Clough is still at Mansfield??

From Premier League Champions to This

10 years from winning the league at 5,000-1, Leicester City are now grinding out results in League One, some say it's good to see, some say it's sad to see. Just enjoy 'em.

Liam Cullen put Leicester ahead in the 11th minute, Jack Diamond levelled for Stockport before half time, and Emil Riis restored the lead on the half hour mark. Leicester then scored twice more, early in the second half, a Riis brace and a header from debutant John Lundstram, to lead 4-1 and look completely safe.

They weren't.

In a wild 15-minute spell, Stockport scored twice, through an Ollie Norwood free kick and a Kyle Wootton tap-in on his 200th appearance for the club, and had 2 more goals ruled out chasing the equaliser. It finished 4-3 to Leicester, a result that eased some of the pressure on manager Russell Martin after last week's heavy home defeat to Oxford United.

Count the disallowed goals and Stockport win… but if my grandma had wheels.
