EFL Matchweek 4 Midweek Round-Up: 5 Things You Might've Missed

I don't mind a bit of deadline day midweek footy, me.

Here's what happened across the Championship, League One and League Two while a lot of the football world was looking elsewhere.

PNE Announce Signings on the Screen Mid-Game and Lose

Preston picked an eventful night to eventually get their transfer business done, and presented it in an interesting way.

Johnny Kenny's move from Celtic and Liam Gibbs' loan from Norwich City had been agreed before the deadline but weren't confirmed until Deepdale's big screen lit up in the 70th minute of the Bristol City game, with the scores level at 1-1 after Caleb Wiley's leveller.

The screen lit up with a plain blue background and in Arial was written "Duing the game we are pleased to announce we have signed two players!". Tinpot? Quite possibly.

It should have been a nice moment. Instead, Bristol City scored twice in the final 15, through Lisav Eissat in the 79th minute and substitute Dom Ballard in the 86th, to win 3-1.

Preston remain bottom of the Championship, now with 4 defeats from 4 games.

Wonderstrike, Wasted

There's a version of this story where Harrison Biggins' goal is the one that wins Newport a shock three points at Salford. Sadly for County, this is League 2.

Salford keeper Will Norris was miles off his line in the 71st minute, and Biggins, spotting the gap from inside his own half, lobbed him with a finish that had no business going in. Newport were suddenly ahead at Peninsula Stadium, against the run of play and against most people's understanding of geometry.

It didn't last. Taylor Allen levelled for Salford in the 83rd minute, and with Newport 'running on empty' according to manager Hayden Mullins, Kelly N'Mai grabbed a stoppage-time winner to turn what was likely to be a goal for the Newport history books, into one likely forgotten by the end of the season.

A crazier stat, it's now the second successive season a Newport player has scored from inside their own half and walked away with nothing to show for it. Sammy Braybrooke did it on loan at Colchester last December. Biggins went even further out and still couldn't turn it into points.

Possibly the Worst Miss You'll See This Season

Bojan Radulović put Huddersfield Town ahead against Oxford United in the 56th minute after 55 painful minutes of proper League 1 football. From there Joe Taylor should have made the game safe, but instead, managed to miss an open goal at the far post, sliding a shot wide of the opposite post after Archie Collins' deflected cross fell invitingly into his path.

Oxford made him pay for it. Gatlin O'Donkor went down the other end and scored, putting the them level.

Then Taylor did what strikers on a run tend to do. He put Huddersfield back in front in the 74th minute, added a third in the 77th, turning two glaring misses into a matchwinning double inside 3 minutes.

A Season Ending Blow in the First Minute

Jakub Stolarczyk was on the pitch for less than a minute before sadly coming off against Plymouth.

He had barely touched the ball at King Power Stadium before he was rushing out to close down Ronan Curtis and collided with his own teammate Jayden Joseph in the process. The Leicester goalkeeper went down in real pain and was stretchered off before the game had even reached a minute old, with Alex McCarthy on in his place by the 6th minute.

It has been confirmed that Stolarczyk will be out for the remainder of the season.

That should have unsettled a Leicester side still chasing their first win since relegation from the Championship. Instead, two academy graduates got them there. Will Alves broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, and Harry Howell doubled the lead 2 minutes later.

Plymouth's Tyreeq Bakinson hit a post late on, but Russell Martin's side held on for their first league win of the season, moving up to 10th in League One.

1-0 in 23 Seconds and Still Won

Most of Bramall Lane was still on the concourse Bolton took the lead. Thierry Gale burst down the left, saw his shot blocked, and Xavier Simons swept home the rebound with just 23 seconds on the clock, about as fast a reminder as football offers that pre-match songs can jinx as easily as they inspire.

Sheffield United only needed 4 minutes to respond, Japhet Tanganga levelling almost immediately, and what followed was a pretty decent end-to-end thriller. Sam Dalby put Bolton back ahead in the 67th minute, Patrick Bamford equalised for the Blades in the 68th, and the game looked destined for a share of the spoils until teenager Romelle Donovan popped up in the 93rd minute to win it for Chris Wilder's side.

5 goals, a stoppage-time winner from a teenager, and Chris Wilder celebrating like Sheffield United had won the league title rather than just their first 3 points of the season. Just your average Tuesday night at Bramall Lane.
